bullet NEWS: "Hospital For Joint Diseases Establishes Joint Preservation Center"

First Orthopaedic Program to Use Clinical and Research Data to Advance Joint Care

The Hospital for Joint Diseases at NYU Langone Medical Center (HJD) has established the Joint Preservation Center of New York (JPC), the first program to use multidisciplinary clinical and research expertise from across the medical center to identify the best individualized treatment to reduce symptoms, restore function and slow or halt the onset of degenerative arthritis and potential joint replacement.

“The aging population is working longer and leading more active lives – and injuries to joint cartilage is increasingly becoming a common source of pain and disability for roughly two million Americans each year,” said Laith Jazrawi, MD, associate professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center and director of the sports medicine division and co-director of the JPC. “The goal of the Joint Preservation Center is to advance orthopaedic research and clinical care to help our patients maintain or return to their lifestyles.”

bullet NEWS: Excerpt from Crain's Health Pulse on Thursday, September 24, 2009 -

NYU Musculoskeletal Center
NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases is building a $60 million Musculoskeletal Center, which it bills as the “first stand-alone facility in the U.S. where bone and joint patients can seamlessly access clinical care” and research. If approved by the state Department of Health, the new center would compete for patients who prefer to have medical treatment in an outpatient setting instead of a hospital. NYU envisions the proposed center as a one-stop shop. The hospital filed for a certificate of need earlier this month to build the 110,000-square-foot center at East 38th Street and First Avenue. The seven components will be centers for the spine, sports medicine, arthritis and total joint replacement, and comprehensive pain treatment; the Rusk Institute for Outpatient Rehabilitation; the Peter D. Seligman Center for Advanced Therapeutics; and liaisons for the Musculoskeletal Research Center.
